Hound's Tongue (Cynoglossum officinale) has a history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in European folk practices. It was often applied externally as a poultice or ointment to treat wounds, sores, and abscesses. The rationale was largely empirical, based on observation and traditional herbal doctrine rather than scientific investigation. Preparations made from the leaves or roots were believed to possess soothing, drawing, or mildly antiseptic properties, which led to their application on abscesses and other skin eruptions.

However, there is little to no modern scientific validation for these uses. Contemporary research into Hound's Tongue has focused primarily on its toxic pyrrolizidine alkaloids, which can cause liver damage if ingested. There is scant evidence regarding its efficacy or safety for abscesses, either topically or internally. Most references to its use for abscesses are in historical herbals or ethnobotanical records rather than peer-reviewed studies. As such, while its use is justified by tradition, the evidence supporting this application is weak (rated 1/5), and current medical advice would generally discourage its use due to potential toxicity.
