Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Fern-leaf yarrow (Achillea filipendulina) has a history of traditional use in various cultures for treating wounds and skin infections, including abscesses. The broader genus Achillea (notably Achillea millefolium), has been used topically for its purported antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Historical records and ethnobotanical sources indicate that poultices or infusions made from yarrow leaves and flowers have been applied to boils, abscesses, and ulcers to promote healing and reduce infection. The use is based largely on tradition and anecdotal evidence rather than rigorous scientific validation.

Although some laboratory studies have shown that Achillea species possess antimicrobial and wound-healing activities, these studies are mostly preliminary and often do not focus specifically on Achillea filipendulina or on abscesses in particular. There is a lack of well-designed clinical trials evaluating the efficacy of Fern-leaf yarrow for abscess treatment in humans. Therefore, while its use is justified by tradition and some in vitro findings, the overall evidence supporting its effectiveness for abscesses is limited, meriting a modest evidence rating.
