Evidence supporting the use of: Clerodendrum indicum
For the health condition: Abscesses
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Clerodendrum indicum (also known as Tubeflower or “Bharangi” in some traditional medicine systems) has been used in various traditional healing systems, particularly Ayurveda and folk medicine in India and Southeast Asia, for the management of abscesses and similar inflammatory conditions. Historical texts and ethnobotanical records cite the use of crushed leaves or root paste applied topically to abscesses, boils, or skin swellings to promote healing, reduce inflammation, and help drain pus. The rationale behind such use is based on the plant’s reputed “anti-inflammatory” and “antimicrobial” properties, as described in ancient Ayurvedic texts and by local healers.
However, direct scientific validation for these uses is limited. Some modern pharmacological studies indicate that Clerodendrum indicum extracts possess antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activities in vitro and in animal models, which could theoretically support its traditional use for abscesses. For instance, methanolic extracts of the plant have shown activity against certain bacteria that can cause skin infections. Nevertheless, there is a lack of robust clinical trials or controlled studies directly evaluating its effectiveness and safety for treating abscesses in humans. Therefore, while the traditional basis is well-established and there are some plausible pharmacological mechanisms, the overall quality of evidence remains modest, justifying a rating of 2 out of 5.
