Calotropis gigantea, commonly known as crown flower or "arka" in Ayurveda, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in South Asia, for the management of abscesses and similar skin conditions. According to Ayurvedic texts, the latex, leaves, and bark of Calotropis gigantea are applied topically as poultices or pastes to abscesses to promote ripening, drainage, and healing. The plant is described as having "tikshna" (sharp) and "ushna" (hot) properties, believed to help in resolving localized collections of pus.

From a scientific standpoint, there is limited but suggestive evidence for antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties of Calotropis gigantea extracts. Several in vitro studies have shown that the latex and extracts possess activity against a range of bacteria and fungi, which could theoretically be beneficial in managing infected abscesses. For example, research published in Phytotherapy Research and other journals has demonstrated antibacterial activity of the plant's latex against pathogens like Staphylococcus aureus. However, robust clinical trials or well-designed animal studies specifically evaluating the efficacy of Calotropis gigantea in the treatment of abscesses are lacking. The evidence, therefore, is primarily traditional, with some preliminary scientific support but not enough to fully validate its use by modern clinical standards.

Caution is advised, as the latex and other parts of the plant can be irritating or toxic if misused. Overall, the use of Calotropis gigantea for abscesses is justified by tradition and supported by some preliminary pharmacological findings, but not by high-quality clinical evidence.
