Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Aucubin is an iridoid glycoside found in several medicinal plants, prominently in Plantago species (plantain). Its use for abscesses is primarily grounded in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in European and Asian phytotherapy. Historically, poultices and topical preparations from plantain leaves containing aucubin have been applied to abscesses, boils, and infected wounds to promote healing and reduce inflammation. Folk medicine texts and ethnobotanical records document such uses, often attributing the efficacy to the plant’s purported antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties.

While in vitro laboratory studies have demonstrated that aucubin has some antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects, there is limited and indirect scientific evidence specifically supporting the use of aucubin for abscesses in humans. The majority of modern support for aucubin’s role in treating abscesses comes from its inclusion in traditional remedies and not from rigorous clinical trials or robust pharmacological studies targeting abscess treatment. As such, while there is a plausible rationale—based on traditional use and some preliminary pharmacological findings—the direct scientific validation is weak, and the evidence remains largely traditional.
