Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Arisaema species, commonly known as "jack-in-the-pulpit" or "cobra lily," have a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in Chinese and Ayurvedic systems. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Arisaema (typically Arisaema erubescens or Arisaema heterophyllum) is processed and used as "Tian Nan Xing" (天南星). It is traditionally believed to "dry dampness," "transform phlegm," and "reduce swelling," and is specifically cited in classical texts as being employed to treat swellings, abscesses, sores, and carbuncles, especially when combined with other herbs. The use for abscesses is usually external, as the raw plant is toxic due to calcium oxalate crystals and other irritant compounds; processing is required to reduce toxicity. Modern pharmacological studies have focused primarily on Arisaema's anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor effects, but direct scientific validation for its efficacy in treating abscesses is limited or lacking. Most support comes from its traditional use, rather than robust clinical trials. Animal and in vitro studies have shown some anti-inflammatory properties, but these are not specific to abscesses. Thus, the use of Arisaema for abscesses is justified primarily by tradition, with only low-level preclinical evidence suggesting possible benefit.
