Anamu (Petiveria alliacea) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems in Central and South America, the Caribbean, and parts of Africa. It has been employed for a variety of ailments, including infections and inflammatory conditions such as abscesses. Traditionally, the leaves or roots of Anamu are prepared as poultices or decoctions and applied topically to abscesses or infected wounds in an attempt to promote healing and reduce infection. The rationale in traditional medicine is likely based on perceived antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects.
Scientific evidence supporting Anamu’s use specifically for abscesses is limited. Laboratory studies have demonstrated that extracts of Petiveria alliacea possess some antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory activities in vitro. For example, some research indicates inhibition of bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, which can cause abscesses.
