Abrus, commonly referring to Abrus precatorius (jequirity or rosary pea), has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine. In these contexts, various parts of the plant (especially the leaves and seeds, but also roots) have been applied externally or used in preparations for the treatment of abscesses, boils, and other skin conditions. The basis for this use is primarily anecdotal and rooted in ethnobotanical practices, where poultices or pastes made from crushed leaves or seeds are applied to affected areas to purportedly reduce swelling and promote healing.

However, there is very limited scientific evidence to support the efficacy of Abrus for abscesses. Some laboratory studies have identified antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties in extracts of Abrus, particularly due to bioactive compounds such as abrin and various flavonoids, but these studies are mostly in vitro or in animal models and do not specifically address abscesses in a clinical context. Additionally, the seeds are highly toxic if ingested, and improper preparation can be dangerous. As a result, the use of Abrus for abscesses is justified mainly by traditional knowledge rather than robust scientific validation.
