Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is scientifically recognized for its role in wound healing, including the repair of abrasions. Its biological functions are central to collagen synthesis, a structural protein vital for skin integrity and tissue repair. Multiple studies and clinical observations have demonstrated that vitamin C deficiency can impair wound healing, leading to delayed recovery and weaker scar formation. Supplementation in deficient individuals has been shown to restore normal healing rates. In addition to collagen formation, vitamin C acts as an antioxidant, reducing oxidative stress at the wound site and supporting immune function, both of which are important for preventing infection and promoting tissue regeneration.
While most evidence comes from studies on general wound healing or in the context of deficiency states (such as scurvy), there is a logical extension to the management of minor skin injuries, including abrasions. Some human and animal studies suggest that topical or oral vitamin C may accelerate epithelialization and reduce healing time, though robust, large-scale clinical trials in otherwise healthy individuals with abrasions are limited. As a result, vitamin C is often recommended as a supportive nutrient in wound healing protocols, especially for those at risk of deficiency. However, its use as a primary treatment for abrasions in individuals with adequate dietary intake is less well supported.
