Evidence supporting the use of: Fern-leaf yarrow
For the health condition: Abdominal Pain
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Fern-leaf yarrow (Achillea filipendulina) is primarily used to support or treat abdominal pain based on traditional and folk medicine practices rather than robust scientific evidence. In various herbal traditions, especially in parts of Europe and Asia, yarrow species have been used for gastrointestinal complaints such as stomach cramps, mild abdominal pain, and indigestion. The plant contains several bioactive compounds, including flavonoids, sesquiterpene lactones, and tannins, which are thought to contribute to its antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory effects.
However, most of the historical use and research focus on Achillea millefolium (common yarrow), with Achillea filipendulina (fern-leaf yarrow) being used less frequently but often interchangeably in traditional contexts. There are few, if any, clinical studies specifically examining fern-leaf yarrow for abdominal pain in humans. The evidence is therefore primarily anecdotal and rooted in herbalist texts and ethnobotanical surveys. Laboratory studies on yarrow species in general suggest possible mechanisms (such as smooth muscle relaxation), but these have not been substantiated in rigorous human trials for this species and indication.
In summary, fern-leaf yarrow’s use for abdominal pain is justified by traditional use and limited in vitro or animal research, rather than solid scientific confirmation. Its efficacy and safety profile for this purpose remain inadequately studied in modern clinical settings.
