Evidence supporting the use of: Jiaogulan
For the health condition: Weight Loss
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Jiaogulan (Gynostemma pentaphyllum) has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine, where it is commonly referred to as the "immortality herb." Traditionally, it is valued for its adaptogenic and tonic properties, with anecdotal reports suggesting it may help with weight management or metabolic health. However, direct references to its use specifically for weight loss are limited in classical texts. More often, jiaogulan was employed to promote overall vitality, balance energy, and support cardiovascular and metabolic functions, which indirectly relate to weight control. Modern scientific studies on jiaogulan and weight loss are limited but emerging. Preliminary animal studies have suggested that compounds in jiaogulan, particularly gypenosides, may influence lipid metabolism, reduce fat accumulation, and improve insulin sensitivity. A few small-scale human clinical trials have hinted at possible benefits for obesity and metabolic syndrome, with some evidence of reduced body weight and improved glucose control when using jiaogulan extracts. Nevertheless, the quality and quantity of this research do not yet provide strong scientific validation for its use as a primary weight loss aid. Most evidence remains indirect or of low quality, and more robust, large-scale human studies are needed. Thus, its use for weight loss is best classified as traditional, with some early but inconclusive scientific support.
