In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Atractylodes (often as Atractylodes macrocephala or Atractylodes lancea) is considered a "Qi tonic" and is employed to strengthen the spleen and dry dampness. Some classical TCM formulas that include Atractylodes may be used for conditions presenting with sore throat, but the herb is rarely the main ingredient targeting this symptom. Rather, its inclusion is meant to support the body's underlying balance and immune function.

There is limited historical documentation of Atractylodes being used as a primary remedy for sore throat; instead, herbs like Lonicera (honeysuckle) or Forsythia are more directly associated with throat and respiratory complaints in Chinese herbal practice.
