For the health condition: Sex Drive (low)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Vitex Agnus-Castus, also known as chaste tree or chasteberry, has been used in traditional herbal medicine for various reproductive health concerns, particularly those related to menstrual cycle regulation, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), and mild hormone imbalances in women. Traditional use sometimes extends to claims regarding its effects on libido or sex drive, most commonly in the context of reducing sexual desire. Historically, monks used Vitex to help maintain celibacy, believing it could lower sexual urges—hence the name “chaste tree.” There is, however, a lack of robust scientific evidence supporting its efficacy in increasing low sex drive. Some contemporary herbal sources speculate that by balancing hormones, Vitex may indirectly support libido in women with certain hormonal imbalances, but these claims remain largely anecdotal and are not substantiated by high-quality clinical trials. Most scientific research focuses on its effects on PMS, luteal phase defects, and related conditions, not directly on sexual desire or libido. Therefore, while Vitex is traditionally associated with effects on sex drive, particularly in the context of reducing it, there is minimal evidence for its use in treating low libido, especially for increasing sexual desire.
