Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) has some scientific basis for its use in supporting or treating seborrhea, but the evidence is limited and not robust. Seborrhea, particularly seborrheic dermatitis, is a skin condition characterized by red, scaly, and sometimes greasy patches. Early observations linked deficiencies of certain B vitamins, including B6, to various skin disorders. Clinical reports from the mid-20th century noted that individuals with severe B6 deficiency could develop seborrheic dermatitis-like symptoms, especially around the nose, mouth, and scalp.

Supplementation of vitamin B6 has been shown to improve these symptoms in deficient individuals. For example, classic studies demonstrated resolution of seborrheic skin changes in infants and adults with B6 supplementation. However, in the general population, cases of seborrhea are rarely due to frank vitamin B6 deficiency.

There is limited direct evidence from controlled trials in the modern era supporting the use of vitamin B6 for seborrhea in people with normal nutritional status. Most current guidelines do not recommend B6 supplementation for seborrheic dermatitis unless a deficiency is identified. In summary, while there is some scientific rationale—especially in deficiency states—the evidence supporting routine B6 supplementation for seborrhea is weak, and its use is mainly justified in cases of proven deficiency.
