Green tea (Camellia sinensis) has been investigated for its potential benefits in managing psoriasis due to its rich content of polyphenols, particularly epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG). Several laboratory and animal studies have shown that EGCG possesses anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory properties. In mouse models of psoriasis, topical or oral administration of green tea extracts has been observed to reduce skin inflammation, decrease proliferation of keratinocytes (a hallmark of psoriatic plaques), and modulate the immune response by lowering levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α and IL-17. Additionally, EGCG may inhibit the signaling pathways (such as STAT3 and NF-κB) that are often overactive in psoriasis.

Despite these promising preclinical findings, clinical evidence in humans remains limited. Only a small number of pilot studies or case reports have evaluated topical green tea formulations in people with psoriasis, with some noting mild improvements in skin lesions. However, larger, well-controlled clinical trials are lacking, and green tea has not been established as a standard treatment for psoriasis in dermatological guidelines. Its use is primarily supported by mechanistic rationale and preliminary studies rather than robust clinical proof. Therefore, while the scientific basis for green tea’s benefits in psoriasis is plausible and emerging, its clinical effectiveness remains to be fully validated.
