Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ophiopogon root (Ophiopogon japonicus, known as Maidong in Traditional Chinese Medicine, TCM) is primarily used in traditional medicine to support/treat night sweating. In TCM, night sweats are often attributed to "Yin deficiency," and Ophiopogon root is believed to nourish Yin, clear heat, and generate body fluids. It is a common ingredient in classical herbal formulas such as Sheng Mai San ("Pulse Generating Powder"), which is frequently prescribed for symptoms including night sweating, palpitations, and fatigue associated with Yin deficiency.

Despite its extensive use in traditional contexts, scientific research specifically validating the efficacy of Ophiopogon root for night sweating is limited. Some pharmacological studies have shown that Ophiopogon contains saponins and polysaccharides with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, and there is some evidence suggesting it may affect thermoregulation and immune function. However, clinical trials focusing on its use for night sweating, especially in populations such as menopausal women or those with tuberculosis, are rare and generally of low methodological quality.

In summary, the use of Ophiopogon root for night sweating is well-established in traditional medicine, but scientific validation remains preliminary and indirect. The current evidence base would be rated as moderate from a traditional perspective, but low from a scientific perspective.
