Evidence supporting the use of: Menthol oil
For the body system: Nerves
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Menthol oil, derived from peppermint, has been used both traditionally and in modern medicine for its effects on the nervous system, particularly for its cooling sensation and potential to relieve discomfort. Scientifically, menthol acts on cold-sensitive TRPM8 receptors in the skin and mucous membranes, producing a cooling effect that can distract from pain (a phenomenon known as counter-irritation). Studies have shown menthol may have mild analgesic properties and can reduce sensations of pain or irritation by modulating neuronal activity. For example, topical menthol preparations have been found to provide temporary relief in conditions like tension headaches, neuropathic pain, and minor muscle aches, likely due to its ability to inhibit voltage-gated sodium channels involved in pain signal transmission. However, while these mechanisms are documented, robust clinical evidence for menthol’s direct support of the overall "nerves body system" is limited; its use is mostly symptomatic rather than curative. Systematic reviews note that while menthol is generally safe and effective for short-term topical use, more high-quality, large-scale studies are needed to confirm its broader neurological benefits. In summary, menthol oil’s use for nervous system support is partially validated by science, but its benefits are modest and primarily limited to symptomatic relief.
