Evidence supporting the use of: Bamboo
For the health condition: Nausea and Vomiting
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Bamboo, specifically bamboo shoots and bamboo shavings (often referred to as Zhu Ru in traditional Chinese medicine), have a long-standing history of use in East Asian herbal medicine to address nausea and vomiting. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), bamboo shavings are valued for their cooling and phlegm-resolving properties, and are commonly included in formulas aimed at harmonizing the stomach and alleviating symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and restlessness. The TCM theory attributes these benefits to bamboo's ability to clear heat and transform phlegm, which are considered underlying causes of such digestive symptoms.
However, scientific validation for bamboo’s efficacy in treating nausea and vomiting is limited. While some in vitro and animal studies suggest that certain bamboo extracts possess anti-inflammatory or gastroprotective effects, there is a lack of robust clinical data directly linking bamboo or its derivatives to the effective treatment of nausea and vomiting in humans. Most modern medical guidelines do not include bamboo as a recommended therapy for these symptoms. Thus, while bamboo's use for this purpose is well-established in traditional medicine, the evidence supporting its effectiveness is primarily historical and anecdotal rather than scientific, which is reflected in the moderate evidence rating.
