Evidence supporting the use of: Reishi mushroom
For the body system: Lymphatics
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Reishi mushroom (Ganoderma lucidum) has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where it is considered a “tonic” for overall health and longevity. In TCM, reishi is sometimes thought to “strengthen the qi,” which could be interpreted broadly as supporting immune and systemic functions; however, there is no direct historical or traditional documentation specifically linking reishi to the lymphatic system as understood in modern medicine. Scientific research on reishi has primarily focused on its effects on the immune system, inflammation, and possibly on certain aspects of cancer care, but studies do not directly address its impact on lymphatic function or lymphatic health. While some of the immune-modulating effects of reishi could theoretically have downstream effects on lymphatic tissues (since the lymphatic system is part of the immune system), there is no clinical or preclinical evidence specifically demonstrating that reishi mushroom directly supports or improves the lymphatic system. Thus, its use for lymphatic support is justified more by tradition than by rigorous scientific evidence, and even in tradition, this use is indirect.
