Green tea (Camellia sinensis) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in East Asia, where it has been valued for its general health-promoting properties. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), green tea is believed to "clear heat" and promote the excretion of toxins, which is sometimes interpreted as supporting kidney function. However, these descriptions are rooted in the language and conceptual framework of TCM rather than modern nephrology. There is limited direct scientific evidence specifically linking green tea consumption to improved kidney health in humans. Some animal studies suggest that the polyphenols in green tea, particularly epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), may have protective effects against certain types of kidney damage due to their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. However, clinical trials in humans focusing specifically on kidney function are scarce, and the results are not robust enough to draw firm conclusions. In summary, while green tea is traditionally used in some systems to "support" the kidneys, scientific validation for this specific use is limited and the evidence is rated as weak (2 out of 5).
