Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Mangostin, particularly alpha-mangostin, is a xanthone compound found in the mangosteen fruit (Garcinia mangostana). There is some scientific evidence suggesting that mangostin possesses antiviral properties, but the majority of this evidence comes from in vitro (cell culture) studies rather than human clinical trials. Laboratory research has demonstrated that alpha-mangostin can inhibit the replication of certain viruses, such as HIV-1, dengue virus, and herpes simplex virus, by interfering with viral entry or replication mechanisms. For example, a study published in the journal Bioorganic & Medicinal Chemistry Letters (2012) showed that alpha-mangostin inhibits dengue virus type 2 replication in cell cultures. Another study in Phytotherapy Research (2014) indicated potential anti-HIV-1 activity. However, these findings have not yet translated into robust clinical evidence of efficacy in humans. There is a lack of well-designed clinical trials to confirm mangostin's antiviral effects or to establish its safety and effective dosage for viral infections in humans. In summary, while mangostin has shown promising antiviral activity in preclinical research, further studies, particularly in humans, are required to determine its true therapeutic potential against viral infections.
