Jiaogulan (Gynostemma pentaphyllum) has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine and other Asian herbal systems, where it is often regarded as an adaptogen and tonic herb. Its use to support the hepatic (liver) system is primarily based on traditional practices rather than extensive modern scientific validation. Historically, jiaogulan has been consumed as a tea or supplement for general health, longevity, and to enhance the body’s resilience against various stresses, including those affecting the liver.
Some in vitro and animal studies suggest potential hepatoprotective effects, such as antioxidant activity and the ability to modulate liver enzymes or ameliorate chemically-induced liver damage. However, these studies are limited and do not provide robust clinical evidence for its efficacy in humans. There are few, if any, high-quality clinical trials specifically investigating jiaogulan’s effects on human liver health. Thus, while traditional use is well-documented, the current scientific evidence is preliminary and insufficient to firmly validate its use for liver support.
In summary, jiaogulan’s application for hepatic system support is rooted in tradition, with some early scientific indications but lacking strong clinical validation at this time.
