Evidence supporting the use of: L-methionine
For the body system: Hair
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
L-methionine is an essential amino acid that plays a role in various physiological processes, including the synthesis of proteins and other amino acids. Its potential use in supporting the hair body system is primarily based on its role as a sulfur donor, which is important for the synthesis of keratin—the primary structural protein in hair. Some studies have investigated the role of methionine, along with other amino acids such as cysteine, in supporting hair growth and structure. However, direct scientific evidence specifically validating the efficacy of L-methionine supplementation for improving hair growth or preventing hair loss in healthy individuals is limited and of low quality. Most of the available evidence comes from in vitro studies, animal models, or small-scale human trials that often use methionine as part of a combination therapy with other nutrients. While deficiencies in essential amino acids, including methionine, can contribute to hair health problems, there is insufficient robust clinical data to support the use of L-methionine supplements for hair health in the general population. Therefore, the scientific validation for this use is weak, and more well-designed human studies are needed to establish its efficacy.
