Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Broussonetia species, particularly Broussonetia papyrifera (Paper Mulberry), have a history of use in traditional medicine systems, especially within East Asian herbal practices. Historical records and ethnobotanical surveys indicate that various parts of the plant have been used for their purported anti-inflammatory and detoxifying properties. In traditional Chinese medicine, preparations of Broussonetia are sometimes recommended for conditions described as "heat-toxicity" or "swelling," which may include presentations such as swollen lymph nodes or glandular swellings. The rationale is typically based on the plant's described abilities to "clear heat" and reduce swelling. However, scientific validation for these uses is limited. While some laboratory studies have identified anti-inflammatory and antioxidative compounds in Broussonetia extracts, direct clinical evidence supporting efficacy for swollen lymph nodes or glandular issues is lacking. There are no high-quality clinical trials or pharmacological studies specifically investigating its action on lymphatic swelling in humans. Therefore, while traditional use exists and provides the main justification for this application, the evidence strength is modest, relying mainly on anecdotal and historic reports rather than rigorous scientific data.
