Vitamin C, including in the form of ascorbyl palmitate (a fat-soluble derivative of ascorbic acid), has a basis in scientific literature for its use in supporting gum health and treating gingivitis, but the evidence is limited and not robust. Vitamin C is essential for collagen synthesis and maintaining the integrity of connective tissues, including those in the gums. Deficiency in vitamin C can cause scurvy, which is characterized by bleeding gums and gingival inflammation, directly linking vitamin C to oral health. Several clinical studies have shown that low vitamin C intake is associated with an increased risk of periodontal disease, including gingivitis. Supplementation with vitamin C in deficient individuals can improve gingival bleeding and inflammation.

However, most studies focus on ascorbic acid, the water-soluble form, and not specifically on ascorbyl palmitate. The latter is sometimes used in oral care products for its stability and fat solubility, but direct clinical trials demonstrating its efficacy in treating gingivitis are lacking. Systematic reviews and professional dental guidelines generally support adequate vitamin C intake as part of overall oral health maintenance, but do not recommend high-dose supplementation or topical use in the absence of deficiency. Therefore, while there is scientific rationale and some supporting evidence, it is not strong or specific enough to be considered a primary or stand-alone treatment for gingivitis.
