Evidence supporting the use of: Moringa
For the health condition: Gingivitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Moringa (Moringa oleifera) has garnered interest for its potential role in supporting or treating gingivitis, primarily due to its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. Several in vitro and animal studies have demonstrated that moringa leaf extracts can inhibit the growth of oral pathogens such as Streptococcus mutans and Porphyromonas gingivalis, which are implicated in the development of gingivitis. Additionally, moringa contains bioactive compounds like flavonoids, tannins, and vitamin C, all of which contribute to reducing inflammation and oxidative stress in the oral cavity.
A handful of small-scale human studies and clinical trials have tested moringa-based mouthwashes or gels for managing gingival inflammation and plaque accumulation. For example, a randomized controlled trial published in 2020 found that a moringa mouthwash reduced gingival bleeding and plaque scores comparably to chlorhexidine over a two-week period. However, these studies are typically limited by small sample sizes, short durations, and lack of blinding. The overall body of clinical evidence remains preliminary, but suggests a potential benefit.
While moringa does have a history of traditional use for oral care in some cultures, the justification for its use in gingivitis management is increasingly supported by early-stage scientific studies. Nevertheless, more rigorous, large-scale human trials are needed to confirm its efficacy and safety for this indication. Based on current evidence, moringa’s use for gingivitis can be considered "scientific," but the strength of evidence is still modest.
