For example, a randomized clinical trial conducted by De la Rosa et al. (2003) found that a dentifrice containing a proprietary enzyme blend significantly reduced gingival bleeding and plaque compared to a control group. The proposed mechanism is that these enzymes help break down the biofilm matrix and inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria associated with gingivitis, while also supporting the action of natural salivary enzymes. However, while the evidence is promising, most studies are short-term and often sponsored by manufacturers, indicating a moderate level of scientific validation rather than robust, independent confirmation.
