Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Catechins, a class of polyphenolic compounds most notably found in green tea, have been investigated for their potential role in supporting oral health, including the management of gingivitis. Several in vitro and clinical studies indicate that catechins possess antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties relevant to oral health. Specifically, catechins have been shown to inhibit the growth of major periodontal pathogens such as Porphyromonas gingivalis and Streptococcus mutans, and to reduce the production of inflammatory mediators implicated in gingival inflammation.

Clinical studies—though often small and of variable methodological quality—have reported that mouthwashes or chewing gums containing green tea catechins can help reduce gingival bleeding, plaque accumulation, and markers of inflammation when used as adjuncts to standard oral hygiene. For example, a randomized controlled trial published in the Journal of Periodontology (2012) found that catechin-containing mouthwash led to a significant reduction in gingival bleeding and inflammation over several weeks of use compared to placebo.

While these findings suggest a scientific rationale for catechin use in gingivitis, the overall quality and quantity of evidence is moderate rather than strong. Most studies do not isolate specific catechins, and larger, longer-term trials are needed to confirm efficacy and establish optimal dosing. Thus, the use of catechins for gingivitis is supported by scientific evidence, but not yet at the highest levels of clinical validation.
