Evidence supporting the use of: Asam gelugor
For the health condition: Gingivitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Asam gelugor (Garcinia atroviridis) is traditionally used in Southeast Asian folk medicine, including in Malaysia and Indonesia, for a range of ailments, including as an ingredient in remedies for oral health such as gingivitis. Ethnobotanical records and local practices suggest that decoctions or extracts from the fruit or rind have been applied orally to address gum inflammation and other mouth problems. The traditional rationale is based on the fruit’s sourness and perceived "astringent" properties, which are thought to help reduce swelling and soothe inflamed tissues.
However, scientific evidence directly supporting the efficacy of Asam gelugor specifically for gingivitis is limited. Some in vitro studies have indicated that various Garcinia species possess antimicrobial and antioxidant properties, which may theoretically benefit oral health by reducing bacterial load and oxidative stress in the gums. Yet, these studies are either preliminary or not specific to gingivitis or to Garcinia atroviridis itself. Clinical studies in humans addressing this use are lacking.
In summary, the use of Asam gelugor for gingivitis is primarily justified by traditional practice, with only weak indirect scientific evidence (e.g., general antimicrobial activity) and no robust clinical validation to date.
