Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Honduran Sarsaparilla (Smilax regelii or related species) has traditionally been used in various folk medicine systems for a range of ailments, including as a general tonic for liver and digestive health. However, specific use for supporting the gall bladder—especially for cases described as "sluggish" or after gall bladder removal—derives primarily from traditional herbal practices, not from robust scientific study. Herbalists have sometimes recommended sarsaparilla for its purported abilities to "cleanse" the blood and support liver and gall bladder function, often based on its content of saponins and phytochemicals believed to have mild detoxifying effects.

Despite these uses in traditional herbalism, there is very limited published scientific research specifically examining sarsaparilla’s effects on gall bladder function or its utility after gall bladder removal. Most available studies focus on its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, or immunomodulatory properties, rather than direct effects on biliary health or bile flow. As a result, the evidence rating for its use in this context is low, and its recommendation is best understood as rooted in tradition rather than scientific validation.
