Green tea (Camellia sinensis) is sometimes used as a supportive natural remedy for Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) due to its bioactive compounds, particularly epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). The scientific rationale comes from in vitro studies showing that EGCG has antiviral properties, including against herpesviruses such as EBV. Research published in peer-reviewed journals indicates that EGCG can inhibit EBV lytic cycle activation and interfere with the expression of viral antigens. For example, a 2012 study in Virology demonstrated that EGCG suppressed lytic replication of EBV in cultured cells. Additionally, EGCG is known for its anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties, which may help mitigate some symptoms associated with EBV reactivation or chronic infection.

However, it is important to note that most of the evidence comes from laboratory (cell culture) research, and there are no robust clinical trials in humans demonstrating that drinking green tea or taking green tea extracts significantly improves EBV infection outcomes. The use of green tea for EBV is not rooted in traditional medicine but is rather inspired by recent scientific findings about its bioactive components. Therefore, while there is a scientific basis for investigating green tea as a supportive agent against EBV, the evidence is currently limited and preliminary, justifying a low-to-moderate rating.
