Jujube (Ziziphus jujuba) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where it is commonly included in formulas to “nourish the heart” and “calm the spirit.” In TCM, jujube is believed to help with emotional disturbances such as irritability, anxiety, and restlessness—what might be described as “emotional sensitivity.” The fruit is thought to have sedative and anxiolytic properties according to classical herbal texts, and is frequently prescribed alongside other calming herbs for those experiencing emotional instability or heightened emotional responses.
Scientific research on jujube’s effects on mood and emotional sensitivity is limited but growing. Some animal studies suggest that jujube extracts may have anxiolytic and sedative effects, likely mediated through modulation of neurotransmitters like GABA and serotonin. However, high-quality human clinical trials are scarce, and existing studies primarily focus on general anxiety or sleep improvement rather than specifically on “emotional sensitivity.” Thus, while there is a plausible pharmacological basis and extensive traditional use, direct scientific validation for jujube’s efficacy in treating emotional sensitivity in humans is still limited. Most current recommendations remain grounded in traditional practice rather than rigorous clinical evidence.
