Vitamin E, specifically in the form of alpha-tocopherol, has been investigated for its potential role in supporting the treatment of eczema (atopic dermatitis), primarily due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Several small clinical studies and randomized controlled trials have explored the effects of oral and topical vitamin E supplementation in patients with eczema. Some studies suggest that vitamin E may help reduce the severity of symptoms such as itching, erythema, and edema, likely by reducing oxidative stress and modulating inflammatory pathways in the skin.

For example, a 2015 double-blind, placebo-controlled trial found that oral vitamin E supplementation led to a significant improvement in eczema severity scores compared to placebo. Additionally, topical vitamin E preparations have been reported to improve skin barrier function and reduce inflammation in some pilot studies. However, the overall quality and size of these studies are limited, with small participant numbers and variations in formulations, dosages, and study durations.

Systematic reviews and larger meta-analyses have concluded that while there is some evidence supporting vitamin E's benefit as an adjunct therapy for eczema, the data are not robust enough to recommend routine use. More high-quality, large-scale clinical trials are needed to establish efficacy and optimal dosing. Current evidence rates as low-to-moderate in quality, supporting a cautious but potentially beneficial role for vitamin E in eczema management.
