Bicarbonate (mixed), such as sodium bicarbonate or combinations with potassium bicarbonate, has a long history of use as an antacid for the relief of dyspepsia (indigestion). The primary mechanism of action is its ability to neutralize gastric acid in the stomach, thereby reducing acidity and alleviating symptoms such as heartburn and discomfort associated with dyspepsia. This use is supported by both historical and scientific evidence. Pharmacology textbooks and clinical guidelines acknowledge bicarbonate as an effective, fast-acting antacid.
Clinical studies, however, are somewhat limited due to the availability of newer and more effective medications (such as H2 blockers and proton pump inhibitors) that have largely supplanted bicarbonate in routine management. Nonetheless, bicarbonate's efficacy in providing short-term symptomatic relief is well documented, and it remains available in over-the-counter antacid preparations.
