Multiple randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have examined zinc supplementation, especially in the form of lozenges or syrup, for its ability to reduce the duration and severity of cough and other cold symptoms. The proposed mechanisms include inhibition of rhinovirus replication and modulation of the immune response, which can help reduce inflammation in the respiratory tract. However, the evidence is mixed: while some studies show a statistically significant reduction in cough duration—especially when zinc is administered within 24 hours of symptom onset—others find little or no benefit. The quality of evidence is moderate, with some concerns about methodological differences, dosages, and the forms of zinc used. It is important to note that in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), "Cough (damp)" is a specific syndrome, and zinc is not a traditional remedy for this pattern. Additionally, adverse effects such as nausea and taste disturbances can occur with zinc, especially at higher doses.
