Evidence supporting the use of: Asteracea
For the health condition: Congestion (bronchial)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
The use of unspecified Asteraceae species (the large daisy family, which includes plants such as chamomile, elecampane, and calendula) for bronchial congestion is primarily justified by traditional herbal medicine rather than strong scientific evidence. Historically, some members of the Asteraceae family have been employed in folk medicine to relieve symptoms of respiratory congestion. For example, elecampane (Inula helenium) root, a well-known Asteraceae member, has been traditionally used as an expectorant to help clear mucus from the bronchial passages. Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) is also sometimes used for its mild anti-inflammatory and soothing properties, which may indirectly support respiratory comfort.
However, the evidence for these uses is largely based on historical texts, ethnobotanical reports, and anecdotal accounts rather than robust clinical trials. There are a few laboratory and animal studies suggesting mild expectorant or anti-inflammatory actions for specific Asteraceae species, but these are not sufficient to establish clinical efficacy for bronchial congestion. Furthermore, the Asteraceae family is very large and diverse, and not all members have been used or studied for respiratory conditions. Therefore, while traditional use exists for some species, scientific validation remains limited, and the evidence should be considered modest (rated 2/5).
