Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Meadow sage (Salvia pratensis) is traditionally used in some European folk medicine systems as a supportive remedy for colds and related respiratory issues. The use of sage species, including meadow sage, is rooted in their historic application as herbal teas or gargles to soothe sore throats, reduce inflammation, and offer mild antimicrobial effects. The most well-documented member of the sage family for these purposes is Salvia officinalis (common sage), not meadow sage specifically, but related species are sometimes used interchangeably in folk practices. The evidence for meadow sage’s efficacy in preventing colds is largely anecdotal and based on traditional herbal knowledge rather than robust clinical trials. Some in vitro studies of sage extracts (not specific to meadow sage) have shown mild antiviral and antibacterial properties, which may explain its traditional use, but there is a lack of direct research on meadow sage’s activity against cold viruses in humans. Overall, while its use is supported by tradition, scientific validation is limited and the clinical evidence specifically for cold prevention is weak.
