Citrus fruits, such as oranges, lemons, and grapefruits, are commonly associated with the prevention and management of colds, primarily due to their high vitamin C content. The tradition of using citrus for colds goes back many decades, but there is also scientific evidence that has been explored in modern clinical studies. Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) has been extensively studied for its potential to prevent or reduce the duration and severity of the common cold. However, the results of these studies are mixed. Meta-analyses, including a comprehensive review by the Cochrane Collaboration, have found that routine vitamin C supplementation does not significantly reduce the incidence of colds in the general population, but it may provide a modest reduction in cold duration and severity. Some evidence suggests greater benefit for people under physical stress (e.g., marathon runners or soldiers in subarctic conditions), but not for the general public.
Citrus fruits themselves have not been studied as extensively as pure vitamin C supplements, but they do provide vitamin C alongside other nutrients and phytochemicals. There is little evidence that consuming citrus specifically prevents colds, but it is a nutritious food choice. Overall, scientific support for citrus in cold prevention is limited and modest, justifying a low-to-moderate evidence score.
