Evidence supporting the use of: Ginkgoside
For the health condition: Circulation (to the brain)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Ginkgosides are the primary active compounds found in Ginkgo biloba extract. The use of Ginkgo biloba for improving cerebral circulation and cognitive function has a long history in traditional medicine, but it is also supported by a substantial body of modern scientific research. Clinical studies have investigated standardized Ginkgo extracts (typically EGb 761, which contains defined amounts of ginkgosides and other constituents) for their effects on blood flow to the brain, cognitive performance, and symptoms of cerebrovascular insufficiency—such as memory impairment and dizziness. Research suggests that ginkgosides may promote vasodilation, improve microcirculation, reduce blood viscosity, and protect neurons from oxidative damage, all of which are relevant to brain health and circulation.
Meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials indicate that Ginkgo biloba extract can result in modest improvements in cognitive function, particularly in individuals with mild cognitive impairment or dementia, though results are mixed and not all studies show benefit. The evidence for its use in healthy individuals is less robust. Most guidelines do not recommend Ginkgo as a first-line treatment, but acknowledge its potential benefit due to its vascular and neuroprotective properties. Adverse effects are generally mild, but interactions with anticoagulants and antiplatelet drugs are a concern. In summary, there is scientific evidence—though not unequivocal—for the use of ginkgosides to support cerebral circulation and cognitive health.
