Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Trichosanthes, a genus of plants in the cucumber family (notably Trichosanthes kirilowii and Trichosanthes cucumerina), has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). In TCM, Trichosanthes is often prescribed for various inflammatory conditions, including those affecting the mouth such as canker sores (aphthous ulcers). The plant is believed to "clear heat" and "remove toxins," which are traditional concepts corresponding to inflammation and infection in modern terms. Trichosanthes root (Tian Hua Fen) is sometimes included in herbal formulations aimed at reducing sores, swelling, and pain in the oral cavity.
However, scientific validation for its use specifically in canker sores is limited. There are a few in vitro and animal studies showing that extracts from Trichosanthes possess anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties, which could theoretically be beneficial for oral ulcers. Yet, clinical evidence in humans for the treatment of canker sores is lacking. No high-quality controlled clinical trials have confirmed its efficacy or safety for this use. Most information supporting its use is derived from traditional practice, case reports, and anecdotal evidence.
Therefore, while Trichosanthes is traditionally used to support the healing of canker sores, the quality of evidence is low, relying mainly on historical practice rather than robust scientific research. Caution should be exercised, and individuals should consult healthcare providers before using it for this purpose.
