Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Black Nightshade (Solanum nigrum) has a long history of use in various traditional medicine systems, especially in Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and some African folk remedies. In these systems, Black Nightshade has been employed for its purported anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and wound-healing properties. Specifically, it has sometimes been recommended as a topical application or as a rinse to help alleviate mouth ulcers, including canker sores (aphthous ulcers). The rationale is based on the plant’s reputed cooling and healing effects, which are believed to soothe mucosal tissues and reduce inflammation.

However, direct scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of Black Nightshade for canker sores is very limited. While in vitro and animal studies have suggested that extracts of Solanum nigrum possess anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, there are no well-designed clinical trials or pharmacological studies specifically evaluating its use for aphthous ulcers or canker sores in humans. Most references to its use for this purpose are anecdotal or found in ethnobotanical literature, not in peer-reviewed medical research.

Furthermore, Black Nightshade contains potentially toxic alkaloids, and its safety profile—particularly for oral use—has not been well established. Thus, while its use is rooted in tradition, scientific validation is lacking, and caution is warranted due to possible toxicity.
