Evidence supporting the use of: Ardisia
For the health condition: Canker Sores
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Ardisia species, particularly Ardisia crenata and Ardisia japonica, have a history of use in traditional medicine across East Asia. In Chinese herbal medicine, Ardisia is sometimes used for its purported anti-inflammatory and wound-healing properties. There are anecdotal and ethnobotanical reports that preparations from Ardisia roots or leaves are utilized for the management of mouth ulcers, including canker sores, especially in folk remedies. However, the direct application for canker sores is not a major or widely documented traditional indication, and specifics may vary based on local practices.
With respect to scientific validation, there is little to no high-quality research directly investigating the effect of Ardisia extracts or constituents on canker sores (aphthous stomatitis). Some pharmacological studies indicate that certain Ardisia species possess anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial compounds, theoretically supporting their use for oral lesions. Despite this, no clinical trials or robust experimental studies corroborate their effectiveness or safety for treating canker sores in humans.
Therefore, the use of Ardisia for canker sores is justified primarily by traditional practice rather than scientific evidence, and the overall strength of evidence is low (rated 1).
