Evidence supporting the use of: Lomatium
For the body system: Bronchials
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Lomatium dissectum, commonly known as Lomatium or "desert parsley," has a long history of traditional use among Native American tribes in the western United States as a remedy for respiratory ailments, including coughs, colds, influenza, and bronchitis. The root was typically brewed into teas or tinctures to help ease symptoms associated with infections of the bronchial and upper respiratory tract. Historical accounts from the early 20th century, including those during the 1918 influenza pandemic, mention the use of Lomatium root as a supportive therapy against respiratory infections. However, scientific validation for these uses is limited. While in vitro studies have demonstrated some antimicrobial and antiviral properties in Lomatium extracts, there are no well-controlled clinical trials confirming its effectiveness or safety for supporting bronchial health in humans. Most of the current support for Lomatium’s use for the bronchial system is based on anecdotal evidence and ethnobotanical records rather than modern medical research. As such, its use for supporting the bronchial system is best described as traditional, with a moderate rating due to its consistent historical use, but lacking strong scientific corroboration.
