Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly among Native American tribes and later in Western herbalism. It was commonly applied as a topical remedy to treat various skin infections, wounds, and inflammatory conditions, including boils. The plant's roots contain active compounds such as berberine, hydrastine, and canadine, which exhibit antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties in laboratory studies. Historically, goldenseal poultices were used as a natural antiseptic to help draw out infections and promote healing of abscesses and boils.

However, while laboratory research shows that berberine (one of goldenseal’s constituents) has activity against several bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus (a common cause of boils), robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. There is little modern scientific evidence directly supporting goldenseal’s effectiveness for treating boils specifically. Most of the support for its use in this context remains anecdotal or based on traditional practice rather than scientific validation. The safety of topical application is generally considered acceptable, but allergic reactions can occur.
