Trace minerals, including elements such as zinc, copper, selenium, and manganese, play crucial roles in cardiovascular health and are necessary for the maintenance of healthy arteries. Scientific evidence supports their importance in various enzymatic and antioxidant processes that protect the arterial walls from oxidative damage and inflammation—both of which are key contributors to atherosclerosis and other arterial diseases. For example, selenium is a cofactor for glutathione peroxidase, an antioxidant enzyme that helps prevent lipid peroxidation in arterial membranes. Zinc is involved in anti-inflammatory pathways and endothelial function, while copper is needed for the formation of connective tissue and proper vascular elasticity. However, while deficiency in these trace minerals is associated with increased cardiovascular risk, supplementation in individuals with adequate dietary intake does not show consistent benefit in preventing or treating arterial disease. Most of the evidence supporting the role of trace minerals comes from observational studies and some interventional trials that focus on deficiency states. There is less robust evidence from large randomized controlled trials to justify supplementation purely for arterial health in the general population. Therefore, while trace minerals are scientifically recognized as necessary for arterial health, the evidence for supplementation in non-deficient individuals is moderate rather than strong.
