L-taurine is an amino sulfonic acid found in high concentrations in the brain and has been studied for its potential effects on the central nervous system. Its use in supporting or treating anxiety disorders is primarily justified by preclinical (animal) studies and a small number of human trials, but it is not a traditional remedy for anxiety. Taurine appears to modulate neurotransmission, particularly by acting on the GABAergic system, which is involved in anxiety regulation. Animal studies have shown that taurine supplementation can reduce anxiety-like behaviors, possibly by enhancing GABA activity or by reducing glutamate-induced excitotoxicity. However, robust human clinical trials are limited. A few small-scale studies in humans suggest taurine may have calming effects and improve subjective well-being, but these studies often have methodological limitations, such as small sample sizes and use of taurine in combination with other substances (e.g., in energy drinks or multicomponent supplements), making it difficult to isolate its effects. Currently, there is not enough high-quality clinical evidence to strongly recommend taurine for anxiety disorders, but its biological plausibility and preliminary results provide a rationale for further research. Health professionals do not routinely recommend taurine as a primary intervention for anxiety, but it may be considered as an adjunct in certain cases under medical supervision.
