Lentinula edodes (shiitake mushroom) mycelia have been investigated as potential alternatives or adjuncts to antibiotics due to their bioactive compounds, particularly polysaccharides such as lentinan, and other secondary metabolites. Scientific studies have demonstrated that shiitake extracts possess antimicrobial properties against a range of bacteria, including some pathogenic strains. The mechanisms suggested include disruption of bacterial cell walls, inhibition of biofilm formation, and modulation of host immune responses. Additionally, lentinan is recognized for its immunomodulatory effects, which may enhance the body's ability to resist infections.
However, most research supporting these effects is preclinical, relying on in vitro (test tube) or animal studies. There are few robust human clinical trials directly comparing shiitake mycelia to conventional antibiotics or showing efficacy as a standalone treatment for bacterial infections.
