Evidence supporting the use of: Camphor oil
For the health condition: Itching
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Camphor oil is widely used topically to relieve itching (pruritus), and its application is justified both by traditional use and by scientific principles, though high-quality clinical trials are limited. Camphor exerts a counterirritant effect: when applied to the skin, it produces a cooling sensation by activating TRPV1 and TRPM8 receptors, which can temporarily override or mask the sensation of itch. This mechanism is well understood and forms the basis for its inclusion in over-the-counter anti-itch creams, such as those for insect bites and minor skin irritations.
Historically, camphor has been used in various cultures for centuries to treat skin discomforts, including itching. In modern times, the FDA recognizes camphor (at concentrations of 3-11%) as a safe and effective topical analgesic and antipruritic agent when used appropriately.
However, direct clinical studies examining camphor oil alone for itch relief are limited. Most evidence comes from its use in combination products and mechanistic studies. Excessive use or ingestion of camphor is toxic; thus, it should never be applied to broken skin or ingested.
In summary, camphor oil is scientifically justified for topical relief of itching due to its counterirritant action and widespread traditional use, though more targeted clinical studies would strengthen the evidence base.
