Evidence supporting the use of: Andrographolide
For the health condition: Herpes
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Andrographolide is a diterpenoid compound isolated from the plant Andrographis paniculata, widely used in traditional medicine for its anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties. There is some emerging scientific evidence suggesting andrographolide may have activity against herpes simplex virus (HSV). Several in vitro studies have demonstrated that andrographolide and extracts from Andrographis paniculata can inhibit HSV-1 and HSV-2 replication and reduce viral cytopathic effects. The proposed mechanisms include inhibition of viral entry, suppression of viral gene expression, and modulation of host immune responses.
However, while these laboratory results are promising, there have been very few, if any, high-quality human clinical trials evaluating the efficacy of andrographolide or Andrographis extracts in treating herpes infections. Most of the available evidence is limited to cell culture studies or animal models. Some traditional medical systems (such as Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine) use Andrographis for general viral infections, but its specific use for herpes is not well-established in traditional literature.
In summary, there is preliminary scientific support for the antiviral activity of andrographolide against herpes viruses, but robust clinical evidence in humans is lacking. The current evidence can be rated as "weak" or preliminary (2/5), and further clinical research is needed to confirm its efficacy and safety for herpes treatment.
