Magnesium is an essential mineral that plays a crucial role in energy metabolism, muscle contraction, and nerve function—all of which are critical for physical endurance. Scientific evidence indicates that magnesium is important for athletes and those experiencing fatigue or reduced endurance, particularly if they are deficient in this nutrient. Studies have shown that magnesium supplementation can improve exercise performance in individuals who are magnesium-deficient, possibly by reducing the accumulation of lactate in muscles and promoting efficient energy production through its role as a cofactor in ATP (adenosine triphosphate) synthesis.

However, in individuals with adequate magnesium levels, supplementation does not consistently enhance endurance performance. A systematic review in Nutrients (2017) and several randomized controlled trials suggest that while magnesium supplementation may reduce perceived exertion and improve performance in those with low magnesium status, the benefits for well-nourished athletes or the general population are modest or negligible. Nonetheless, magnesium deficiency is relatively common, especially among athletes, due to increased losses through sweat and urine.

In summary, there is moderate scientific validation for the use of magnesium to support endurance, especially in cases of deficiency. Ensuring sufficient magnesium intake is important for optimal physical performance, but supplementation beyond correcting a deficiency does not offer substantial gains in endurance.
